Bowl Cover Tutorial

I have just become acquainted with bowl covers. I LOVE THEM! You can even put your plastic wrap over the bowl and then the cover and everything stays in place. A friend bought a pair from a home-goods store and I immediately thought I can make those. When she told me what she paid for them I knew I could make them for way less. I will say hers had extra ruffles and special frills that I’m sure made the cost more acceptable but I like simple so here you go.

Materials:

1 fat quarter – For a large bowl You will have some left over. A fat quarter should also work for a large salad bowl.

Elastic – I used 1/4″ elastic for both small and large bowls.

Marking Utensil – (chalk, pencil, marker)

Small Bowl trace edge the same way. Depending on how much ruffle you want on the edges depends on how much space you add to the edges. I chose 1″.

Draw a second line by marking .5″ on your marking tool and follow the first line. Then do the same thing again with the outer line.

As you can see the extra spacing is 1″. Cut along the outer line and line up your elastic along the middle line.

Measure the elastic by stretching it around the bowl. You want to stretch a bit or subtract an inch to add extra snugness to the final product. Stitch the ends to make a circle.

Step 3

Stitch the elastic in a loop. Do not twist the elastic. Mark the fabric round and the elastic in 8ths. Fold each in half and mark the points then in half again and mark those points. Find the center of each of those points and mark it or pin it. For a more detailed example click here.

Pin the elastic matching up the 8th points in the fabric and elastic. Line up the elastic with the inner line markings.

Step 5

Stitch the elastic in place using a stretch stitch. (Zig zag, honeycomb etc.) Pull the elastic between the pin points. this will help the puckers evenly space. You will have to go slowly to keep the elastic lined up with the middle line. Stretching both sides of the elastic and fabric helps You may also have to stitch in smaller segments.

Ready to go. By stretching the elastic and stitching slowly the fabric bunches with the elastic.

You are ready to go to your next picnic with security and a little flare.
