Natural Air Freshener and Deodorizer

Natural Air Freshener and Deodorizer Home Hack from H&P ArtistryNatural Air Freshener and Deodorizer

It’s time for a good old-fashioned Home Hack. I like to make Homemade products when I can because it is safer for the environment and lighter on my wallet. This Natural Air Freshener and Deodorizer recipe is both. The key to making these items at home is to know what to expect from the final product. Most store-bought products have artificial colors and fragrances that are enhanced to last longer and smell stronger. Natural air fresheners have a very light scent and because of the backing soda absorb more scent than they release. This mixture is best placed in bathrooms, closets, or any area that tends to smell musty, closed up, or damp.

Recipe

1 8 oz or smaller jar with canning lid
Burlap to fit lid (Can use decorative paper and poke lots of holes)
1/2 – 3/4 cup baking soda
1 tbsp Lavender dried
5 – 15 drops essential oil depending on scent strength
Scissors
Pencil

Step 1

Fill the jar with 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup baking soda.

Baking soda absorbs and helps to eliminate unwanted odors. It is a good idea to place an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator to absorb food odors. Do Not Use The refrigerator baking soda for cooking once stored in the refrigerator.

Put the burlap into the open lid with out the seal.

Step 7

Natural Air Freshener and Deodorizer Home Hack from H&P Artistry

Replace the lid and place in the chosen room to freshen the air. You may need to add essential oil occasionally to boos the scent. You will also need to replace the sealing lid and shake the mixture every week or so to keep the baking soda from clumping up.

Make Your Own Household Cleaning Wipes from H&P Artistry

I love the convenience of cleaning wipes but they can be really expensive. If you worry about the ingredients in cleansers they can also be chemical mine fields. My biggest advice when finding natural or homemade cleaners is to do your research. You do not want to mix cleansers even natural ones if you do not know the chemical reaction they have when mixed. Also not all natural cleaners are antibacterial or kill germs. Bleach and water is still the best cleanser out there for disinfecting a surface. Vinegar is great for cleaning and breaking down stains but it does not kill all germs. If you want to check call your local environmental agency or health department.

I am sharing a light cleanser and a heavy cleanser the difference is the addition of Alcohol in the heavy cleanser to help kill germs. Continue reading Make Your Own Household Cleaning Wipes

Windshield DeIcer Winter Home Hack

Windshield DeIcer Winter Home Hack from H&P Artistry

Windshield DeIcer Winter Home Hack

Windshield DeIcer Winter Home Hack from H&P Artistry

One of my favorite parts about winter is watching the snow fall outside. Tennessee weather is unpredictable and we can have a foot or two of snow one weekend and 70 degree temperatures the next. Luckily this year we had enough snow for the Kiddo and I to have a snow day. A real snow day, we threw snow balls, made a (sort of) snowman, sled a little, and made snow angles. We haven’t had that much snow since she was a baby. It was a lovely winter memory for the books.

The worst part about winter for me is driving in the icy conditions, sitting in a cold car while waiting for it to warm up, and scraping ice from the windshield and mirrors. Luckily for me I have an awesome Mom and Dad that gave me a de-iceing trick that I am going to share with you.

First a list of do not dos:

Do not use hot water to defrost your windshield – You will crack or shatter the glass.

In sub zero (or close to) temperatures do not turn on your defrost until the car has gradually warmed up. The instant blast of heat to the glass can crack or shatter it.

A list of to dos:

Do keep a Winter Emergency Kit in you car or trunk.

A blanket or two, a part of thick socks, batteries, flashlight, extra gloves, a scarf, protein bars and bottled water in you car. You never know when you might need them.

Now to my Mom and Dad’s awesome trick.

Ingredients

1 Part Water

2 Parts Isopropyl Alcohol

1 Spray Bottle

Cloth or paper towels

Instructions

Mix 1 part water

Windshield DeIcer Winter Home Hack from H&P Artistry

and 2 parts Isopropyl Alcohol in a measuring cup.

Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake well to combine.

Remove loose snow from the windshield.

Windshield DeIcer Winter Home Hack from H&P Artistry

Spray the windshield well. Let the mixture set for a few seconds to begin melting the ice.

Windshield DeIcer Winter Home Hack from H&P Artistry

Wipe the ice away with a soft cloth or paper towel.

Windshield DeIcer Winter Home Hack from H&P Artistry

If any Ice remains repeat the process. It is best to work one section at a time.

How does it work?

Alcohol does not freeze in turn it helps to melt the ice on the windshield. Keep a small bottle in the trunk with your winter emergency kit for just in case occasions. It will not freeze.

Test a small section of the windshield or a mirror first just in case you are the one in however many that might have a weakened or damaged windshield. I’ve never had a problem but I have to disclaim just in case.

What is your Favorite winter weather Hack?

Air Freshener Spray

Air Freshener Spray Home Hack from H&P Artistry

Today’s home hack is an Air Freshener Spray. You guys liked the room deodorizer and freshener so much that I decided to share this one as well. This is a super easy way to freshen your home that you can make your self. Again this is one of those moments where you need to understand that this is not a super long-lasting fragrance like store-bought air fresheners. The fragrance staying power depends on the fragrance oil or essential oil you use and where you use it. If sprayed on fabric the fragrance will last a bit longer than if sprayed into the air. You might be tempted to use a lot of fragrance oil. Don’t! Some oils can stain and you do not want to accidentally damage household items 10 to 30 drops is enough. Check the oil manufactures instruction and they should have a guide on the percentage tobe used in room spray. Continue reading Air Freshener Spray

How to Sew a Soap Pouch

How to Sew a Soap Pouch

How to Sew a Soap Pouch

What is a Soap Pouch? A Soap pouch or bag is a wash cloth material usually terry cloth that is sewn in to a bag or pouch to hold soap while bathing or showering. The Pouch replaces a regular wash cloth or bath pouf. The soap stays in the bag through out the bath or shower and is removed from the pouch after bathing. The bag can them be laundered and reused. You get the exfoliation and scrubbing power of a poof with out the germs that hide in pouf. Never leave the soap in the pouch because the added moisture will desegregate the soap fast and item left wet in the bath or shower can cause mold or bacteria. Always keep your soaps in a dry place when not in use. Continue reading How to Sew a Soap Pouch

DIY Decorative Clothespins

DIY Decorative Clothespins

Now that I am Homeschooling the Kiddo for the rest of the year I am reaching out for any organizational options for the Kiddo and myself. Luckily I made her a cork board last year so now all I needed was a way to pin her schedule and papers with out poking holes in them. The DIY Decorative Clothespin is the perfect option. It will be great for school lockers as well. All you need to do is replace the push pins with small magnets. I liked them so much that I made some for myself. The beauty is that you can make them match your school colors or change them with the seasons. I’m making a few sets to give as gifts.

Materials:

DIY Decorative Clothespins tutorial from H&P Artistry

Clothespins (I got a pack of 50 for $.97 at walmart)
Decorative tape ($2 each at the local dollar place)
Thumb tacks (or magnets) (The tacks were $1.56 at the local dollar place)
Hot Glue

Scissors

Step 1

DIY Decorative Clothespins tutorial from H&P Artistry

Line up the tape to the edge of the clothes pin. If your tape has a backing cut each piece the needed length first, then press down.

DIY Decorative Clothespins tutorial from H&P Artistry

Press the tape in place keeping it in line with the edge of the clothes pin.

Step 2

DIY Decorative Clothespins tutorial from H&P Artistry

Trim the tape to the length of the clothes pin.

DIY Decorative Clothespins tutorial from H&P Artistry

Trim away the excess tape from the edge of the pin. You can fold over the edges by carefully clipping the edges at the corners and pressing the sides down. Cut away any tape that does not look like it will stay sealed. Loose edges begin to pull away over time. You can add a top coat of nail polish along the edges to glue them in place if needed.

Step 3

DIY Decorative Clothespins tutorial from H&P Artistry

Angle the ends that fold over the top edge to help it seal well. Angling it keeps any of the edges of the tape from rolling up and separating.

DIY Decorative Clothespins tutorial from H&P Artistry

Press the tape again to make sure it is secured well. Seal the edges by pressing them and holding them in place.

Step 4

DIY Decorative Clothespins tutorial from H&P Artistry

Add hot glue to the top of the thumb tack. If you use magnets make sure to line them up the same way. You may want to test the polarity by sticking them on the refrigerator before you glue them on the clothespins.

Press the tack to the back side of the pin in line with the spring.

Let the glue set up over night. You can use them as soon as the glue drys but I recommend waiting overnight to make sure that the bond is as strong as possible.
