Elastic Bookmark Monster Tutorial
As you all know I love Books. As a side effect of loving to read I also love a good bookmark. I really like homemade bookmarks and I have everything from paper to fabric and metal to thin wood. Today’s tutorial is both a sew or no sew project and I will give you both options.
Faux Fur (Long fur in bright colors work best)
Googly eyes (Decorative eyes)
Hot glue (for eyes and no sew option)
Basic sewing supplies (for sewn option)
Measure your bookmark by wrapping it from 1/4 of the way inside the book and around the outside. Over lap edges by 1″.
Option 1: Sew the 1″ overlap in place. I sewed 3 straight stitches to secure the elastic loop.
Option 2: Hot glue the 1″ overlap together. Pinch the elastic on both sides Sandwiching the glue in place to make sure the glue adheres well.
Option 3: Use a 1″ piece of sticky Velcro on each end of the elastic.
Part the fur carefully along the line you want to cut.
Parting the fur keeps you from cutting any of the fur short. It also keeps you from having excess fur shed.
Trim the shape of the fur to make your monster. Play around with the shapes to add personality to your monster.
Choose you monster eyes.
Hot glue the eyes in place.
If sewing the monster to the elastic – Sew the monster in place first then Hot glue eyes in place.
You can use hairspray or gel to shape your monster fur. The spray or gel will not be permanent because the fur shape loosens with use. The eye placement helps to keep the fur form best.
Fold the elastic with the sewn or glued part in the back at the bottom.
Option 1: Glue the monster in place.
Option 2: Sew using a straight or zig-zag stitch along the center of the monster and elastic.
Slide the bookmark in place and enjoy a good book.
Mix and match the elastic with the fur to make each monster different.
