Make Your Own Headband
The Kiddo likes to change up her look a lot and is growing her hair long. I have to find new ways to pull her hair away from and out of her face for school. I like the go to pony tail or bun but she wants variety. That is why I decided to start making her different types of headbands to go with her uniform shirts. It takes about 30 minutes to make one headband and if you use an assembly line you can make a bunch at one time.
Use a ribbon and measure from behind one ear over the head to the behind other ear. Use that measurement divided by 2 for the length of the fabric band. mine is 7.25″
I measured 2″ x 1.5″ for the band and added a seam allowance to equal 2.5″ x 2″. Draw a line between the two points adding a little curve from the 2.5″ point. Cut out the pattern and mark the 2.5″ side as the fold.
Cut two pattern pieces one for the inside and one for the outside of the band. Use two different fabrics if you want to make a reversible band. Remember to line the 2.5″ side to the fabric fold.
Cut a 5″ or less piece of elastic. You can test the measurement by lining the elastic up to the back of the ear to the middle of the neck. The elastic will stretch and fit the head snugly.
Basic sewing supplies.
For the No Sew instructions watch the video below.
Layer the fabric right sides together.
Position the elastic on one end of the band between the layers.
Pin in place. Also pin the elastic in place in the center to keep from sewing over it in the next step.
Pin the rest of the sides in place.
Sew three sides of the band.
Back-stitch the corners and securing the elastic.
Trim the corners and turn right side out.
Iron the edges and corners carefully.
fold the open edges in and iron them flat.
Insert the elastic.
Sew the elastic in place carefully. I back-stitched and sewed two rows of stitches.
For added detail top-stitch around the edges.
The elastic is now secure and the band is ready to wear.
