Marshmallow Crispy Treat Recipe
For Mouthwatering Monday I decided to share a favorite at our house. My Super Marshmallowy Marshmallow Crispy Treat Recipe.
The Beauty of any crispy treat is that you can make them fast, last-minute, and on the cheap. It is a three ingredient recipe that you can add ingredients to make it special. I change-up and use fruity rice cereal, chocolate chips, flavors marshmallows. (Seriously you should try caramel marshmallows)
8 cups marshmallows (mini marshmallows work best)
6 tbsp Butter
6 cups Crisp Rice Cereal
1 – 2 cups unmelted marshmallows
Melt 6 tbsp butter and 8 cups marshmallows. You can use less butter if you like. I use more butter because it seems to soften the treats up a bit. Have you ever bitten into a marshmallow crispy treat and scratched the top of your mouth? I have and the extra butter helps to soften the crisp rice just a little bit.
As soon as the marshmallows are melted take the pan off the heat and pour in 6 cups crisp rice cereal. Stir quickly to incorporate the marshmallow and cereal well. You do not want the treat to begin to set up before you mix everything together.
Add in the extra marshmallows and stir quickly. I use a little over 1 cup of unmelted marshmallows. Stir quickly because the heat from the melted marshmallows will begin to soften and melt the fresh marshmallows. The key is to have bits of marshmallow throughout the treats. This also adds softness to the treats. You could add the flavored marshmallows or any other add in now.
Spray a 9″ x 13″ baking dish with non stick cooking spray. Do not forget this step or the treats will be a mess to cut and remove from the pan.
Pour the treats into the pan and use wax paper or plastic wrap to press the treats into the pan. A really great tip for pressing the treats is to use another baking dish to press the treats into place. This way you do not get your hands sticky, or accidentally burned by the melted marshmallows, and the treats will be uniform. If you use a pan to flatten the treats remember to cover the pan with plastic wrap or spray it with non stick spray. This will keep the treats from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Do not press hard, you only want to flatten the treats not crush the cereal. Crushed cereal can scratch the roof of the mouth as well.
Let the treats cool.
Spray a knife with cooking spray to keep the treats from sticking to it when cutting.
Now your treats are ready to eat. I tend to make a double or triple batch when the kids come to stay at my house. The Marshmallowy treats go fast. I make the batches and let the kids choose toppings to sprinkle on the top once I press them in the pans. We have tried chocolate and caramel chips, raisins and craisins, sprinkles, even gummy bears once (I would not recommend the gummies but the kids did eat them all.)
