Ruffled Tank Top Dress DIY
I made the kiddo a Ruffled tank top dress for St. Patty’s Day and thought you guys might like it as well. It took all of 30 minutes including taking pictures.
Tank Top – Be sure the tank is long enough to make a dress.
2 cuts of fabric 1/4 yard each. Do not use fat quarters unless you want to do a lot more cutting and stitching.
Basic sewing supplies
Measure 5″ up from the bottom of the tank and mark with a chalk marker.
Then mark 2.5″ down from the top mark.
Cut the fabric strips. I squared up the fabric and cut down the center of each to create two 45″ x 4.5″ or 5″ depending on how much you cut off to square the sides.
Ruffle the fabric using a ruffler foot or hand ruffling. To see hand ruffling check out this ruffle tutorial .
Stitch the strips together at each end creating a circle. I used a straight stitch then a 3 point zig zag.
Pin the ruffle in place matching up the side seams and stretching out the tank as you go. for more detailed instructions on pinning to elastic (the tank stretches like elastic) click here.
Stitch in place stretching the tank as you go.
Follow the same steps with the top ruffle.
Trim the edges of the ruffles with pinking shears. The fabric does not fray as easily with pinking shears and it keeps you from having to hem the ruffles.
You are done!!!!
The beauty of this dress is that you can add as many ruffles as you want and make the dress as long as you want.
The Kiddo loves it…. YAY!!!!!!
