T-shirt to Razor Back Tutorial

The Kiddo is growing way to fast. She had 4 growth spurts in the last 6 months. Seriously 4! When you add the fact that she had a birthday last month, finding clothing options we both approve is not easy. I have a hard time giving away clothes that I just got yesterday because they do not fit.

For that reason, when the Kiddo brought me this request, I jumped on it. The conversation was something like this:

Kiddo: “Mom I found a way to keep you from spending more money on my clothes.

Me: OK, let’s do it.

She then described what she wanted and volunteered her favorite t-shirt. (she meant business)  She then volunteered to take the pics. (She really wants this shirt) WOW!

Here is the Razor Back T Tutorial

Materials:

Old t-shirt

Chalk (a marker works in a pinch)

Scissors

Cording, ribbon or wire

Cardboard or paper (used to stop cutting through both sides of the t-shirt)

Step 1

Layout the t-shirt and smooth. You can Iron but it is not necessary.

Draw the Razor Back design.

I free-handed the design but I wish I had used a razor back tank as a template. It really didn’t matter but I think the cuts would be smoother.

Step 2

Trim the sleeves off under the seam line. You can cut the sleeves in to strips and use them as pony tail holders.

Step 3

Insert cardboard and cut along the chalk lines. (I use an old pizza box lid wrapped in foil. (It is wrapped in foil because I also used it for the bleach t-shirts.)

Step 4

This t-shirt was rather long so I cut the bottom 7 inches. Check the t-shirt on the person to see where (how many inches) to cut it off. Then trim any pieces of fabric that are not smooth or even.

Step 5

Stretch the cut edges by pulling along the length of the cut edges. This causes the fabric to curl in on its self and keeps you from having to sew anything. The edges look like they hem themselves as long as you cut an even/smooth line. If you have any uneven pieces the curl is not as pretty or even.

Step 6

Cording.

You could just wear the t-shirt as is, but to add a little detail and structure to the t-shirt I wrapped cording around the back.

Be sure to knot the top and bottom of the wrap well. I knotted the wrap at the beginning, once in the middle and twice in the end to make sire it all stays in place.

Decide where to start cording.

trim excess cording

You can make the cording wrap as little or as much as you want. I choose to only wrap about an inch to inch and a half because that is all the Kiddo wanted. (I would have added more.) You could also braid multiple colors of cording around the back. Whatever you want works its your shirt.

T-shirt back with cording and fabric stretch.

Just remember that you have to wear a band or layer a tank under the top because it is airy and open.
